What is poetry?

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards,
One blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
6 feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you?
'Cause there's a spark in you

What is poetry? Is this poetry? Why? Why not?

  1. I think poetry is simply verbal expression of ideas, that often contains rhyme, symbols, and other literary elements. Sometimes poetry is to supposed to portray an image, and sometimes express their feelings.

  2. My definition of poetry... literary/spoken work with some kind meaning. I believe Katie Perry's song is poetry, because by my definition, nearly anything could be poetry. I think that's the point of poetry - that anything can qualify, depending on the reader. That being said... I hate Katie Perry.

  3. I think poetry is any type of writing that tells a story behind it, and requires some brain power to find out what it means. Regular poems, stories, and even songs are poems. I consider "Firework" a poem because it has a story/meaning behind the lyrics, and it takes some thinking to figure out what the point is that the song is trying to get across.

  4. Poetry is defined as literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. I would say that this song is poetry because it has rhythm, stanzas, and also rhymes. This song is definitely an expression of feelings that a lot of people can relate to.

  7. I think that poetry is a form of writing that composes words and phrases into rhymthmic lines. The lines dont have to rhyme though. Yes, i do believe that these lyrics are poetry. I believe that most music is poetry.

  8. Poetry is works of writing that are given emphasis and special attention to specific feelings or even an idea. Some poems are long and some are fairly short. I think this song is poetry because it is lyrical, is set up in stanzas, and can be interpreted however the listener/reader wants to. It is intensifying a feeling of someone feeling like they are nothing to the world and that we all may feel this way sometimes, but can still overcome it.

  9. Poetry is a work that requiers great effort. It sometimes rhymes and sometimes doesn't. It has a bigger meaning than just what seems on the front cover. I don't think that this is poetry. because it doesn't have a bigger meaning than just song lyrics.

  10. Poetry is a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by use of style and rhythm. I would say that this is poetry because it portrays styles that I see in other poems such as rhyming, repetition, and personification.

  11. I think poetry is basically a shorter, condensed story. It usually includes the use of many literary terms as well as meaning behind the actual words. I believe this song, along with many other songs, can be classified as poetry. It is basically a story being told in an artistical way. It includes thought and meaning behind the words that makes the audience think about what is being said or sung.

  12. I think poetry is just an artistic use of words. Poetry often uses literary techniques such as rhyme, rhythm, metaphor, alliteration, etc, but it doesn't necessarily have to have any of those things. Many times, poetry conveys more feeling and meaning than regular prose could. That said, I think this song is poetry. After all, there's no reason why it couldn't be.

  13. Poetry is an explanation of someone's feelings towards something. I consider this a piece of poetry. She is basically saying do you ever feel alone and out of place. Don't give up though, there is hope. Her feelings would be that there is hope even when you are alone. Music can be a form of poetry.

  14. Poetry is "the art of rhythmical composition", so this Katy Perry song would be considered poetry also. Poetry puts a certain intensity to words in a metrical form just like this song does. She uses analogies that give depth and meaning all while keeping a rhythmic flow.

  15. Poetry is mostly free expression of any issue an author can think about that usually includes some form of emotion. Most of the time authors of poety use rhetorical devices like personification, similes, metaphors, etc. Katy Perry, in this instance uses metaphors and emotion to bring up an issue she wanted to exploint. She uses common symbols and rhetorical questions. This makes Katy Perry's song a poem.

  16. Poetry is literature written in a metrical form. I feel this work is poetry because it has a meter, or a rhythm that emerges from reading it. Also, the piece is full of emotion like poetry is and brings out the emotion out of people. Many people would argue that this is not poetry, but I feel it is. Many songs like this are poetry to begin with, so this to me is more justification it is poetry.

  17. Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition for excited pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. I would consider this poetry because the lyrics do have depth in them. They're kind of easy to understand but they have depth. The words also rhyme & go together pretty well. I also like this song.

  18. I believe that something can be defined as poetry if it gives you deeper feelings. When something portrays deep emotion and feeling, I feel like it could be called poetry. While this song doesn't make me feel anything too deep, to some people it might. I do believe that it could be considered poetry.

  19. Poetry is a literary work in which the speaker portrays emotions and uses specific diction and tone. I believe this song is poetry because it involves feelings and Katy Perry uses her own tone, which could be described as sad or forgotten. It uses metaphors and rhythm like most other poems. Also, it is written in lines and stanzas.

  20. I think that poetry is anything that incorporates a certain set of elements, including but not limited to diction, rhythm, and rhyme. I think that "Firework" by Katy Perry is a poem because it does contain all of those elements, along with simile ("feel like a plastic bag") and an inspiring tone.
