Senior Project

I would like to know where you are in terms of your senior project. How many hours have you currently put toward your project? What progress are you making? What are you learning about yourself? What are you learning specifically about your project? What are you struggling with? Please give as much detail as possible.

  1. On a full week I can put in four hours time so I've easily got enough hours. I've made considerable progress in BJJ but progress in Muay Thai has been more slow. This is largely due to the fact that you're getting punched/kicked/kneed in Muay Thai and it's harder to build confidence. There's also a fundamental difference in BJJ to Muay Thai; BJJ is about knowing different submissions, guard breaks, guard passes, and exact positioning. You have to build up a massive mental repertoire. In Muay Thai there are far less moves, but they depend heavily on execution. Any incorrectly thrown punch or kick or knee can be countered, usually in vicious fashion. By it's very nature, Muay Thai is harder to pick up. There's so much focus on form and balance and weight distribution across your lead and rear leg. The hardest part of the project is finding time. Between school and work and family, I'm sometimes hard-pressed to find motivation to go put in hours.

  2. Honestly, I have not done very many hours at all. I have, maybe, ten? Basically, I've just gotten really distracted and busy doing other things, but I can definitely improve. Even with not having very much time, I do feel like I'm improving a lot. My project is learning to sew, and I think my aunt really taught me a lot just in the first day we worked on it. Also, it's costing a lot less than I'd anticipated, so I'm pretty happy about that. Also, I now have a super-cute stuffed elephant, which is always nice.

  4. I have put a lot of time into my project so far. It is hard to say exactly how much though because the time is scattered here and there. Between working things out with Mr. Stovall, Mr. Skinner, the DJ, and the lighting company, I have done a lot of planning and organizing (way more than I had anticipated). Additionally, getting all the supplies such as the right kind of paint, bracelets, and advertising supplies has taken some time. As it comes closer to the date, January 25, it is getting more stressful and time consuming. I have learned that it can be frustrating to organize something so big, especially by yourself. I was not aware of how much was really involved. For example, I had to get permission from Mr. Skinner, Mr. Stovall, Mr. Merriwether, Mrs. Gilham, and Mr. Huff. I also have to hire custodians and security for the event as well as get teacher and parent volunteers to help out. I really struggled trying to find the blacklights for the rave. I contacted multiple companies trying to rent or buy blacklights, but the options were either too expensive or the companies did not have what I needed. I finally came across a rental company in Indy and am using them, even though they are pretty pricey also. I also struggled with trying to find an area where I could splatter paint on people. Mr. Caswell agreed to let me use the workshop area in the engineering part to set up tarps and do that. The overall expenses for the project are about $600. I am charging $5/person to get in. I am predicting that I can get at least 100 people to go. Mr. Stovall offered to help me out with the expenses if I need it, which is a relief. He has been a huge help to me throughout all this and I probably could not have completed this without him. It has been pretty stressful trying to get everything together, but in the end I am sure it will be worth it!

  6. To be completely honest, I have not spent as much time as I had planned to on my project. I definitely did not realize how difficult and time consuming learning how to video edit would be. Over break I practiced cutting small videos and putting them together while also adding music and voice overs. In the end the combined large video came out pretty rough, which was frustrating because I had worked so hard. I have planned to meet with my mentor so he can teach me specific ways to edit and tricks on mkaing the whole process easier. I have thought about how I want my actual video to come out but I need to make a outline on exactly who I want to be featured in what scene, music to use, and where all I want to shoot. I have a lot of work ahead of me and I am making more time for the preparation and editing. I often procrastinate with my assignments but I know I have to make time for this and really work hard. I'm excited to get the ball rolling on learning more about technology and editing. Although I sometimes kick myself for choosing something so difficult for myself, I am happy that I am challenging myself. I am confident that my finished video will not only be informational for incoming freshman about uniforms but also fun and exciting to watch!

  7. Unfortunately, I haven't spent a lot of time on learning Italian - maybe 4 or 5 hours total. Since I'm taking French I as a class while I'm learning Italian, I have been using work from my French class to plan what I learn in Italian. That way, by the end of the year, I will definitely know as much Italian as someone who had taken one year of the language. One of the hardest things for me is that I'm trying to teach myself. I'm finding it difficult to rely on myself to motivate myself to work because I'm used to a teacher or classmates doing that for me. I haven't yet, but hopefully I'm planning to talk to Gaia (an Italian foreign exchange student)soon and see if she would be willing to help me. I can recognize and read Italian fairly well, but I have trouble when I have to produce vocabulary or phrases and I think Gaia's fluency could really help me with that.

  8. In my project right now, I am not as far as I was hoping to be. I took some time off because of my back and also weather has not been very good. They just reopened the airport after a 2 week shut down seeing that we have a grass runway rather than a concrete. I have completed 2 hours of flight time and have gone up in the plane three times. The first flight was my instructor just showing me the ropes pretty much. The 2nd and 3rd flights I actually did a lot more learning than I had anticipated. He kind of just throws you out there to learn quickly. I did the take off and landings both times on the plane which is exhilarating and I loved it! I also learned how to do slow flight and power off stalls which is where I cock the front of the plane up until the engine stalls and then I turn it back on. I have also had about an hour of ground school where I learned how to check the plane before each flight to ensure that nothing is broken. I am struggling a little bit with getting myself to drive 30 minutes for this project each time I need to go fly. Therefore, I'm struggling with making myself schedule flight time. This is something I am going to have to work on because I'm running out of time to complete all of these hours. This is going to teach me discipline that comes with my responsibility of getting my project done. So far though, flying really is not as hard as I thought it would be.

  9. I have only put a few hours into my project. I would guess about 3 hours. I have just now finished planning my project, so it feels like I have not made much progress. However, from here on will be the easy part, at least I hope so. I am learning I have a hard time controlling my thoughts and getting my thoughts on the page. As for my project, I have learned that booking a campsite is easier than I thought in a state park. Also, I am learning there is a lot more that goes into a camping trip than I originally thought. I am struggling with the fact I cannot do much until the weather turns and that makes me feel like I am falling behind on my project when in fact there is not much I can do.

  10. I am doing pretty well so far with my senior project. I have finished each event I have set up for these months. In September, I set up a bake sale at the Fall Taste of North. In October, I sold facial spirit tattoos for sectionals. In November, I set up Mr. Pretty Legs which was a success. For December, I set up and ran Big Dog on Campus which actually turned out great, too. I have plenty of hours in. I am not quite sure exactly how many hours I have, but I have them all recorded at home. I know I have all of my hours necessary already. I have learned that I am pretty organized through this project because there are so many tasks to accomplish for each event. I have also learned I tend to stress right before a big event. This project has definitely taught me to keep more organized and to stay on task to get everything accomplished. I also have learned that it takes a lot of time to put on such events. I did not realize before how many steps goes in to each project. The main thing I seem to be struggling with is making my goal. I am kind of worried I will not hit my $1,000 mark because by now I expected to be closer to this goal. I hope my next two events will hit this mark. I am currently planning a 3v3 basketball tournament which was supposed to be my event for January, but I could only get a date in February. Now, I will be having two events in February to make up for not having anything in January.

  11. I haven't put a lot of hours into my project yet. It's mainly just been planning for it. I've only put about 3 hours of planning the project. This semester I plan on doing a lot more with it because we have to buy our supplies, start making the games and get people to donate baked goods for the cookie walk we have etc. I'm learning that I'm better at working with another person for projects than by myself. We've come up with some really good ideas together that I don't think I could've put together on my own. I've also learned I'm good a compromising with people. I'm learning that our project is going to cost more money than I thought as far as buying supplies goes, but since I have a partner the cost will be cut in half and not be as expensive as if I did this project myself. I'm also learning that this project is going to have to include some public speaking like speaking in front of our church to ask for baked good donations every Sunday closer to the event.

  12. I'm still in thw process of actually setting up my show. I have talked to my mentor and figured out where to do the art show and how to go about it, but I need to recontact him and schedule an official date. I've spent lots of time on the actually art pieces I'll be putting in the show so my content for the project is coming together well. I'm struggling with actually getting in contact with Jack Schriber because I have put it off. I'm learning more about myself that I put things of like actually getting the venue and stuff together because I don't like that part as much. But since I like the painting more I've focused on that. I still have some work to do, but I AM further than I thought I would be at this point.

  13. I have met with my mentor and developed and put together the class I want to teach. The next class she used the class structure we had come up with for me to watch and see how potentionally i wanted my class to run. She also has given me books with information regarding the online certification I am going to obtain. I have been attending the class pretty often in order to take notes and see how she is teaching and techniques I can use from her. At this point I need to rehearse the routine we've put together and perform it in front of my mom or some friends to become comfortable. I have set a date for the class: April 13, which is a Saturday at 9:15
