The Study of Literature

Why is it important to study literature? Conduct some research--why do others think the study of literature is valuable? Why do you think the study of literature is important?

  1. Others say that literature helps to expose us to new ideas and to be caused to think while also teaching us about the world and other people, and also reflects history. In my opinion, I definitely agree that literature really makes you think and introduces you to so many new ideas.

  2. Literature helps people develop reading skills. It teaches us new ideas and processes of doing tasks. Some people would agree saying literature helps us learn about the world and a bunch of other things. I agree it is important to study literature for us to learn more about life itself.

  3. While I was doing my research, I found that several different websites said that studying literature can expose you to new ideas that cause you to think differently than you might on a day-to-day basis. LIterature also teaches us about the world, different cultures, and life in general. One comment that stood out to me on the internet was that studying literature can make you a more aticulate writer, speaker, and thinker. I have to agree with that statement. I think studying literature is important because it allows me to see things from other points of view and opens my mind to new ideas.

  4. In the research I conducted, I found that most people believe literature to be important because it opens people up to new ideas and thoughts. It also teaches us about people, the world, and even history. I find the study literature to be important because it gives you new ways of understanding things. It actually makes you think a little to understand what is being said.

  5. When researching the study literature, I found that most said it can broaden our horizons. It can give us a different way of reading literature and looking at it from different points of views. Instead of thinking about reading some boring story, we will see deeper into the thoughts and words in the book. It can also widen our vocabulary. Studying literature can also open our eyes to history and where it all began. Later in life, we may also choose to read the more advanced books because we may then fully understand what the writer is trying to say. I personally agree with these statements. I think literature always adds to my vocabulary as well as informing me of history and facts I did not already know. I also believe the more I study literature, the more I begin to enjoy reading the big L books.

  6. People think it is important to study literature because it shows all of the human experience in writing. It shows the emotions of life and the experience of life. I think it is important to study literature because it makes people able to make connections in their world they may have never made before.

  7. I found that other people say literature is a way for us to gain insight into situations, cultures, and ideas that we might not be able to experience otherwise. It broadens our minds and allows us to see things from a different perspective. In addition, literature can allow us to feel connected to other cultures and time periods. I certainly agree with all of this. I think studying literature is important because it gives us a better understanding of ourselves, other people, and the world.

  8. Google says we should read and appreciate literature to open up new ways of thinking and viewing the world. It also gives us information about past cultures, governments, etc. Google's first answer (new ideas) is why I like literature. Even though I almost never agree with the ideas proposed...

    1. Considering those ideas, I think, is the most important part...agreeing or disagreeing is only part of the fun!

  9. Most of what I found was information about exposure to new perspectives and experiences. Even if we don't physically experience something, one of the author's main goals is often to make a story seem as realistic as possible, and that is usually what draws us in so much as readers. I think this is one of the most important aspects of literature. It allows one to see from someone else's perspective and essentially live a completely new, albeit shorter, life through the narrator.

  10. Others said that the study of literature is important because it helps us better understand the world around us. It allows us to analyze why others think and feel the way they do by looking at a perspective through their eyes. Basically, it helps us to open our minds and think in a different way. It enriches our minds and gives us insight on different cultures and new ideas. I agree with these statements. I think literature allows us to see things in a new way by making relations to sources we have read. It also enhances our vocabulary. Literature gives us a better understanding of situations and allows us to possibly even adopt new points of view that we never thought of before.

  11. I found that others believe we study literature because it helps us explore cultures and beliefs. When you read literature, you are not simply learning about other cultures you are also experiencing them. I believe that we study literature because it exposes us to new ideas and makes us think. Personally, my favorite part of literature is that it encourages people to question accepted knowledge.

    1. And sometimes leave us with more unanswered questions...

  12. Before I research anything at all, I'm going to give my opinion. I think it's important to study literature because it has the potential to broaden our perspectives. Obviously, it does nothing for us if we don't let it. If we don't take in what we read, process it, talk about it, we won't grasp it and we won't benefit from it at all. But if we do all of those things, it may completely change us. Who knows?

After researching a little bit, I found that a few people said some of the same types of things. Such as "Benefiting from the insights of others," and "to explore other cultures and beliefs." I find the second one to be very important. If you are only exposed to your own beliefs your whole life, how do you know that you don't believe anything else? That's a bit drastic, I know. I just mean, how are you sure? I don't believe you really can be.

  13. What I found in my research I found that literature helps us to connect us to and explore other cultures. This allows us to get a look into hw other cultures work.

  14. People say that it is important to study literature because reading and writing go hand in hand. Our English class is the same thing just like any other English class, so I feel like I agree with that greatly. I think it is also important to study because it connects us to other things in history or people and we get to learn about something other than what is currently around us.

  15. I got on to a Yahoo chat room on this topic & many people commented saying literature unlocks your mind & that it is a time & space capsule. Literature is an easy way to find out things you didn't know about France or something you were wondering about England in the 1600's. Literature truly is a time capsule.

  16. Looking into what other opinions are about the significance of studying literature I saw that majority believed it was very important in that it allows you to see and understand the point of view and world completely unlike your own. I agree with this because literature allows us, the reader, to enter into a world seen through someone else's eyes. The more prespectives we are able to see the world in the more well rounded, open minded, articulate person we can become.

    1. Also, the more perspectives we are able to see, the more understanding and culturally responsible we become because we've considered, and, in a sense, "lived" in, someone else's shoes.
