Who are YOU as a reader?

As we begin to expand ourselves as readers, I would like to know who you are as a reader right now. What do you choose to read? When do you read? Why do you read? Describe yourself as a reader.

  1. I usually choose to read whatever sounds interesting to me or sometimes the series that is most popular at the moment. If I hear from my friends about a good book, I will most likely go and try out the book to see if I like it. Sometimes I just go to the library and look around and read summaries until I find a book that I seem interested in. I almost always read fiction unless I have an assignment to read non fiction. I occasionally read as a pass time, but most of the time I read because I have to or just if I happen to come across a good book. I choose to read because I think it is fun. If I am reading a good book, I like to be engaged in the book and anticipate what is coming next. I like to have to think about what is about to happen or what just happened.

  2. I don't ususally free read much just because I don't have that much time. However, I do love to read when I do. Some books I like to read are romantic comedy stories or mystery novels. I usually read because I have to for a class. As a reader, I like to understand texts right off the bat which can make reading hard works of literature frustrating or boring to me and I can shut down before I really dive into the text. Through the year, I hope to improve on that skill

  3. When I was younger I used to read all the time. But as I've grown older I have found different ways to occupy my time. But I did start reading again this summer! I read A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. It was really really good. I find personal stories like that really interesting, although I found out later that Frey made it up. I don't really have a specific type of book that I typically read. I will go to the library and look through different books and just read what looks interesting to me. I, for the most part, only read when I'm bored unless I find a book that is really interesting to me. I would say that I, as a reader, get really immersed in the books that I read.

  4. I don't read much in my free time due to my busy schedule. I use to read a lot when I was younger. I think if I had more free time, I would maybe read a little more than I do. I try to read different kinds of books, but I usualy read suspenseful stories. I typically read when I don't have much to do or I happen to go to the library for some reason and I find a book that I like. I like when I can find a book that seem interesting and I get into it. It helps me analyze the story better.

  5. I would like to be able to read more on my free time but with my schedule being as hectic as it is, that never happens. When I do read though, I tend to choose novels that I can relate to or that I know I will be able to finish. Sometimes I start a novel and I think it will be amazing, but then I get halfway through and give up because I get bored with the story. I usually read at night before bed, on my breaks at work while I tan, or during SSR at school. I like to read because it let's me escape my world into a completely different one. I am a sucker for a good romance novel or even a mystery, just something that keeps me on my toes. I hate when I can figure out the plot of the story two chapters into the novel. I always look for books that are unpredictable and interesting.

  6. I wouldn't consider reading a hobby of mine. I don't normally read in my leisure time and I don't read books for pleasure. When I do read, it's usually for a school. When I read for on my own time, I usually read really boring books like the dictionary. When I read on my own time, it's to try to fall asleep. There's some nights where I can't sleep and the easiest way to fall asleep is to read an extremely boring book. Sometimes it's the dictionary, sometimes it's the encylcopedia. I wouldn't really consider myself a strong reader. Comprehending the differences between the protagonist and the antagonist isn't my forte, but if I need to I will.

  7. I don't read much but when I do, I prefer easy books. Not books with pictures, but easy to comprehend books. The last book I read on my own was World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. I love the way it is presented as nonfiction even though it is fiction. I also love writing poetry and music and reading the occasional poem, but not to tear it apart trying to figure it out.

  8. I choose to read books that interest me. I read "little l" books. These books are usually unrealistic and fiction. I read when I have free time, usually in enrichment or right before bed. I do not read that much, but when I do, it is because a book interests me. When a new series comes out, I sometimes read it because I am interested to know what it is all about. I read books that I have heard about because I know they are probably interesting.

  9. I only read a few books outside of school. The last book I read was Ghost Recon: Combat Ops. I enjoy this type of book, the military themed action book. I read when I find a book I think I will enjoy, but these books come few and far between. I especially enjoy the books from Tom Clancy's franchise because they blend a good balance between fighting and technology which is what I really like to read. I read mostly for a good story about stuff I just think is cool. I do not really like to read literature as much, but I can tolerate it.

  10. I really like to read in my free time. I'm drawn to autobiographies because I think it is really interesting to learn about other people's lives and what they've been through. It also lets people get to know someone they never would have otherwise gotten the chance to meet. I also like reading about history and the events and experiences that people of the past got to be a part of. When I read fiction, I try not to go for the typical teenage romance. I like reading stories that have more substance to them and that I can learn from. I tend to read when I'm feeling stressed; I think it's my personal way of getting away for a while to calm down.

  11. I usually choose books that are challenging and thought-provoking. I like to feel as though I've learned something about myself or about society when I'm finished with a book. I also like books that are written artistically, focusing more on conveying emotions and abstract ideas than on following convention. For instance, I recently read In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, and I loved how lyrical it was. It was written in a way that sounded like poetry. I also liked the way Catch-22 is written; it's very unconventional, but it just works. I read pretty much as often as I can. I don't have as much time to free-read during the school year, which is actually pretty ironic if you think about it, so I'm really looking forward to getting the opportunity to read lots of awesome books for this class.

  12. Usually, I can read anything that I find to be interesting. I like reading books about philosophy, neuroscience, astronomy, and really anything else. But usually, when just free reading, I like to read crime novels by James Patterson, such as the Alex Cross series. I'll read science fiction like Stephen King's The Stand. If I'm reading, I'm probably in school. I don't read that much outside of it. I do read outside of school, but not as much as I do in school. I think there is a lot of dead time in school, and I choose to read to keep myself entertained during that dead time. I don't like sitting and doing nothing in homeroom, so I'll read. Of course, there's SSR, but usually I'll read from the time I walk in to the time I walk out. If I finish my homework early in class, I listen to music and read. I don't spend much time talking and things like that, so you'll usually see me reading if not working.

  13. When it comes to reading, I'll read almost anything. I really like reading non-fiction books, but I also love reading fiction. Right now I am reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and I can't say I've ever read any other book like it, but I really enjoy it. I try to read as often as I can; there is never a time when I'm not carrying a book around. Anytime I have any sort of downtime, there is a pretty good chance I'll be reading. I usually read as a form of entertainment. For me, reading is a way of releasing stress and just forgetting about what's going on around me.

  14. I am not a huge free reader. Mostly because i do not have a lot of time. I feel that I usually read things that are fiction. Like i mentioned on the first day of class, my favorite book series "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games". Some non-fiction books that I did enjoy were: "Night", A Child Called It", and "She Said Yes". I see my self as a very narrow minded reader. I say this because I tend to read books around the same genre. I like to read to escape the pressures of life. I like to read when I have time to my self. Reading allows me to escape the world and get into the heads of the characters.

  15. I do not choose to free read on my own time as much as I used to. I just do not find the time and being forced to read for school is enough for me. When I do read, I try to choose books that are either about situations I can relate to in my life, like a girl and a sucky love life or crushing on some person and the adventure to win him over, or I like to read more Sci-Fi things. Nothing die hard weird or abnormal, but I like mythical things. When I read I do it while laying in bed or during the summertime I go out on my porch swing and read. I read because it takes me away from my life and my own problems. I get to learn about something completely different and use my imagination to really get into it.
