Genuine poetry?
"Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood."
T.S. Eliot
Paraphrase this quote. What does it mean for a poem to communicate? Does the ability for a poem to communicate make it genuine? Do you agree with this quote?
I think that the quote means that a good poem communicates emotion to the reader even before the words of the poem are fully understood. I think a poem communicates through the emotion it makes the reader feel. Yes I do believe genuine poetry is able to communicate. I do agree with the quote.
Even if its deeper meaning is not known, true poetry can speak to any reader. I think if a poem communicates effectively it makes readers think about what's going on. I think it is important for poetry to be communicated because otherwise the meaning is lost, so I do agree with this quote.
I think the quote means that a true poem demonstrates a bond between the poem and the reader even if you don't fully understand it. A poem to communicate is to to give you the emotion of the poem and I think that can make it genuine. I do agree with the quote, but then again I don't. I don't think all poetry speaks out to me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't speak out to someone else.
I believe a poem communicates to the reader as soon as the first word is read because every word has a different effect on a person depending on their past experiences or upbringing. Seldom is a poem understood the first or even second time it is read so the fact the a poem communicates to the reader first intrigues the reader to continue in analyzing the poem to ultimately understand it.
This quote says a poem can make people get the point of the poem without having to know what every little thing conveys. The ability of a poem to communicate a message is very important and makes it more genuine. I agree with this quote because I may not understand what a poem is saying, but I know the message it is trying to get across.
This quote by T.S. Eliot simply means that genuine poetry does not need to be understood to tell the reader how the author is feeling. Yes, I do agree with the quote
The poem can have other meanings, which may apply to different individuals, even if it's true meaning isn't known. I think if a poem can communicate, it may be able to apply to several situations or feelings. Even if it's not intentional. I believe I do agree with the quote, because in most ways that you look at it, whether the poem is funny, sad, dark, or angry, it will communicate that and express that to you, whether it means to or not.
I think that this quote is saying that even before a reader fully understands the meaning behind a poem, they can still get the emotional effects portrayed by it. For a poem to communicate means that it makes the reader feel some sort of emotion. Yes I believe that the ability for a poem to communicate makes it genuine. That being said, I do agree with this quote.
Real poetry has meaning before you know what it's saying. I think for a poem to communicate means that it has to have meaning to the person that's reading it. I don't think a poem has to communicate with a person to be genuine. Some poems could mean a lot to certain people, and to others it could not apply to their life at all. I do not agree with this quote for that reason.
A poem can make it's meaning apparent without any heavy analysis. For a poem to communicate it must have more meaning than just its literal intepretation; it must have some sort of emotional power behind it. However, I don't believe all poetry needs some heavy-handed hidden meaning. Poetry encompasses a large variety of work, and this variety brings many different levels of depth and seriousness. Some poems are light and whimsical, while others can hide heavy statements on serious issues. I agree with T.S. Elliot's quote; one doesn't have to necessarily tear apart a poem to understand the basic emotional drive behind it.
A true poem can say something right away, but it doesn't mean we know what it means. When a poem communicates it is telling the reader something like a story or using certain lines and words to help us hear a message. I think the ability for a poem to communicate does make it a genuine thing because even though there are countless poems, not all are clear in what they are saying. Everyone may interpret a poem differently but if it is communicating everyone should get the same general feel. And yes, I do agree with the quote.
This phrase means that if poetryis very well constructed and put together, it can be understood before it is disected and taken apart to find out its true meaning. I think that that a poem can communicate before it is understood. When one first reads a poem, one must read it first to get the overall understanding of it down. Then one must look further into the poem and search for a deeper meaning. Whencompletes the first step, they are trying to get an understanding from the poem as a whole and not by one single line or a phrase or a sound. A poem can communicate just by being there and you reading it.
The poem is saying that real poetry has the ability to communicate to the reader emotionally before the reader can comprehend all it is trying to say. When the poem communicates, it speaks to the reader emotionally. Knowing the poems ability to communicate may or may not make it genuine. I don't know enough about poetry yet to answer that. What is a "genuine poem?" What differentiates a regular poem from a genuine poem?
It is saying some poetry speaks to you before you can even understand what it really means. Different poems speak to different people. When you read a poem, you are looking for specific things that stand out to you. Sometimes titles of the poems alone can make the decision of reading it. If a poem communicates you, it is helping you understand what it is actually about. I agree with this quote. If a poem communicates to you, it obviously means more than you're taking from it. Dig a little deeper & figure out what that is.
This quote means that a poem can "speak" to you even if you do not know the real true meaning. A poem communicates effectively by appealing to one's likes or sometimes even dislikes. I think that a poem's ability to communicate does make it genuine. If you can relate to a poem and feel what it is saying, then it tends to be genuine. I do agree with this quote.
A poem can get feelings across even before the reader fully understands it. I agree with the quote because I think communication is essential to poetry, but poetry can still convey feelings and emotions even if the reader doesn't grasp the full meaning.
I think this quote means that even though we may not understand poetry at first, it still speaks to us in different ways. I think for a poem to communicate means it fills the reader with emotions and deeper thoughts. I believe if a poem communicates to someone then it is genuine. A poem may not speak to everyone and fills people with different emotions, but if it still makes you think and wonder about certain cases then I think it is genuine poetry. Therefore, I agree with this quote because there are some times where I do not understand a poem, but that does not mean it does not speak to me. A poem usually always makes me stop and wonder about what the author is trying to convey, and it usually fills me with some type of feeling or emotion.
Even if it cannot be understood, true poetry can make us feel a certain way. A lot of times, it is hard to find the true meaning of a poem. It takes a lot of analysis to understand what the speaker intends to say. However, a real poem can speak to us through the tone and mood. It can portray certain emotions through the words it uses and the way it is written. I think that if a poem is able to communicate, it is a genuine poem. If a poem is able to get to the reader without being fully understood, the speaker has done their job. I do agree with this quiote because genuine poetry almost always communicates before it is understood.
Most poems have a hidden meaning or something we don't immediately see hidden in between the lines. But, everyone has an initial response to a poem before they even understand the meaning of it. Yes I do agree with this quote because if a poem cannot evoke an initial response from you before you can understand it then it cannot be genuine poetry.
